Modern Chick Flicks 1

      Where do I even begin? I have seen ever so many movies that I would qualify as "modern chick flicks."  For the purposes of this blog post, I am defining modern as taking place in the last 40 years or so. Many such movies that I have seen I will not be recommending, because I am very picky.  But here is a brief list of some of these movies that come to mind to me today.


Holiday in the Wild-- 2019, Rob Lowe

I do have to say that I feel uncomfortable with the fact that the main character is a divorced woman. That aside, I found this movie to be surprisingly really relaxing to watch. The main character is 40-something, and decides to go on a trip to a nature reserve in Africa, and (of course) finds love. I often find movies about animals to be stressful and dramatic, but I was happily surprised by this movie.





While You Were Sleeping-- 1995, Sandra Bullock-- Sweet romcom about a woman who finds both romantic love and a family.





Christmas in the Smokies-- 2015

While this movie has a lot in common with your standard, run-of-the-mill Hallmark Christmas movie, I think it's much better. In this movie, a woman in her late 30s runs into her old high school boyfriend, but is still extremely angry at him. I really like the fact that the dialogue between the two of them wasn't marked by the highly contrived disagreements or outrageously silly misunderstandings or the really uncomfortably cheesy flirting that you usually find in a Hallmark movie. The woman had an awful lot of anger, and while she does let go of it at the end of the movie, she doesn't go from being hurt and angry to magically being super happy and planning a wedding. They don't even kiss in the movie. I found it very refreshing and I feel like the emotion was more real and believable in this movie than in most Christmas romance movies. Bonus points: this movie is rated G. I like very few romances that are rated G, so this movie gets bonus points from me.

Book of a Thousand Days

     This week I read  Book of a Thousand Days , by Shannon Hale. It's a retelling of Grimms' "Maid Maleen," which I know I've read, but am having a hard time remembering.      It was the first book I've read in a long time that was told in first person, but it works really well. There are also some illustrations in this book, which is cool.      I may write a more in-depth review at some point, but for now, I'll simply say that I enjoyed it-- and enough that I read all of it in just a week.

Historically Inspired K-dramas

       I really liked the following. Writing summaries for these series is very challenging, though, because these aren't 2hr or even 3hr movies. These are 16+ hour series with side plots, and surprises, and mysterious character backstories, and romance, and sadness, and treason, and amnesia, and face blindness, and sometimes even action. 100 Days My Prince -- 2018 Narrowly surviving an assassination attempt, a grumpy crown prince gets amnesia and lives as a poor villager. Beyond that... it's so hard to give a good-- but also concise!-- summary without any spoilers. So I'll stop here. Goo Hae-Ryung, Rookie Historian -- 2019 Hae-Ryung is a noble, but not very rich. She becomes a court historian and meets the youngest prince. Also, there's mysteries. My Sassy Girl -- 2017 (NOT the 2001 movie) This one wasn't as promising at first, but the characters grew on me, and I definitely binge-watched the last several hours. Modern Chick Flicks 2

     I realized I'd left some favorites out of my last post! Decoy Bride-- 2011, David Tennant This movie I think is a hidden gem. A silly premise, witty dialogue that includes a T S Eliot reference. It's possibly my absolute favorite modern chick flick-- maybe. It's hard to decide favorites sometimes. But this is up there. Napoleon Dynamite-- 2004 I know what you're thinking, but let me defend myself. I have included this movie in my list of romances because I actually really like what bit of romance is in this movie. Every single character in this movie -- with the exception of LaFawnduh -- is awkward, immature, annoying, a mess... or all of these things. Napoleon's pickup lines are some of the most ridiculous I've heard, Uncle Rico is a disaster, and Kip does nothing all day except whine and chat with people online. Despite all this, these characters all find love and happiness at the end of the movie. They maybe "don't deserve" the happy ending...
